Salsamundo
Night at the Arena Stage
RADIO
MAMBO Starring CULTURE
CLASH
Salsamundo
is organizing a night of theater at the Arena Stage on Tuesday, December 7,
1999 at 7:30 pm. The play entitled Radio Mambo stars Culture Clash, a
three-man team of comic actors. The New York Times calls
Culture Clash "three wildly imaginative talents with the energy and comic
verve of seasoned vaudevillians." Radio Mambo: Culture Clash Invades Miami is a mix of vignettes based on interviews conducted in the richly diverse, urban Miami community. It examines reactions to issues such as Hurricane Andrew, urban renewal, immigration and where to get a plate of arroz con pollo served by a six-foot drag queen. Culture
Clash, three West Coast Chicano/Latinos (a Mexican American and two
Salvadorans) are from Los Angeles. They are celebrating 15 years of delivering
intelligent and culturally relative comedy to people across the nation. In
1994, the Miami Light Project invited the trio to Miami to perform its show,
A Bowl of Beings.
Backed by a Rockefeller grant, the Miami Light Project asked
Culture Clash to create a show about Miami, and Radio
Mambo was born. To research Radio Mambo, Culture Clash interviewed individuals
ranging from Cuban immigrants to environmentalists, to the Jewish old guard,
and blended their stories into a portrait of Miami life. Arena Stage has commissioned Culture Clash to develop
a new show about Washington, DC. While in town performing Radio
Mambo, the group will conduct 40-60 interviews with a wide variety of
Washingtonians. Much as they did in Miami, Culture Clashs members will
"invade" the District to discover what issues Washingtonians face
every day and how, as a community, we respond to those issues and to each
other. The show is slated to be performed at Arena Stage during the 2001-2002
season. Drama-Logue
says Radio Mambo
"has it all: laughs, poignancy, rich characterization, political
complexity and provocative social perspectives." And Vibe
magazine declares, "[Culture Clash] delivers cutting social satire, often
with an unpredictable lyrical twist." The troupeRichard Montoya, Ric
Salinas and Herbert Siguenzahas created several works for the stage,
including Nuyorican Stories,
Radio Mambo, Bordertown:
Culture Clash in San Diego/Tijuana,
The Birds, The
Mission, Carpa
Clash and A Bowl of Beings,
to name a few. Radio Mambo
will be performed through January 2 in the Kreeger Theater. The regular price
of $40.00 for orchestra seats is reduced to $26.00 for our group.
