Best Way to Achieve Both Physical and Mental Health Balance

Daily stresses like work, money, and family problems can all affect your mental health. Poor eating habits and lack of exercise will put you in a poor physical state. You cannot have overall wellness and happiness without balancing physical and mental health. The good thing is, it’s a lot easier to do this than what people think. By finding a nice middle ground, your life is going to be a much happier one. Once you get that figured out, you’re going to be able to enjoy life to its fullest potential.

What’s the Difference Between Physical and Mental Health?

Mental and physical health have often been thought of as two separate things. However, they shouldn’t be disconnected. It’s essential to your physical health to have clear mental health. It’s also important to be in a strong physical state in order to keep your psychological state clear. The two actually are very closely related.

When you aren’t in a good physical state, for instance being overweight, you are more likely to suffer from mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. On the other side, if someone is suffering from a mental health condition like schizophrenia, they have double the chance of dying from heart disease and three times the chance of dying from a respiratory disease.

The reason for this is often when we are suffering from a physical condition, we neglect the mental health aspects. When we are dealing with a mental health condition, the physical state of the body gets pushed to the background. In all reality, the mind and body need to be worked on equally to find that balance.

Balancing Physical and Mental Health

Clearly, it’s imperative to manage mental illness and physical health problems to reach your optimum state of living, but how do you do it? It might sound difficult at first, but there really isn’t much to it. Keep each of these lifestyle factors in mind and put them into play in your life, and you’ll be right where you need to be.

  • Eating healthy foods
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Sleeping seven to eight hours a night
  • Keeping your mind active with hobbies and interests
  • Spending time with people that are good for you
  • Stepping out of the routine once in a while
  • Remembering that everything should be enjoyed in moderation
  • Staying away from negative thinking
  • Helping and sharing with others
  • Making plans for the future

Now, understand how those things work together with an example:

You should feed your body with healthy foods and exercise regularly. That doesn’t mean that you can’t give into your cravings once in a while for a greasy cheeseburger. It’s going to put you in a better mood by having the foods that you enjoy, but if you do it all the time, it’s no longer going to have an effect on boosting your mental health. Your physical health is going to continue to suffer from the poor diet too. See how the two are related?

Ways of Finding A Good Balance

There are a plethora of activities that you can add to your regular routine that will benefit both your physical and mental health state. Before doing anything too drastic, you should talk to your doctor to make sure that it’s going to be okay to do with your current health state. After you get the all clear, think about adding these into your life:

  • Meditation – meditation is extremely beneficial for your mental health, and it doesn’t have to be a complicated event. Just practice five or ten minutes before going to bed or at the start of your day and watch the health benefits unfold.
  • Seeing a chiropractor regularly – by visiting a chiropractor, or anywhere in the country for that matter, you are going to improve your physical state with regular alignments of the spine. When your body is in proper alignment, your overall mood is going to be boosted by improving your mental health.
  • Start a journal – talking about your personal issues and concerns you are having with another person is important, but it’s just as good for your mental health to write some of these things down. You can even write down things that are making you anxious or angry and then throw them away to symbolize how you’re not going to let them affect you anymore.
  • Exercise regularly – exercise is arguably the best way to balance mental and physical health. Not only are you doing good things for the appearance of your body, but when you work out, you are releasing feel-good endorphins in your brain. It’s going to improve your mood just by getting out and going for a walk at least three times a week. Doing your exercise outside has even proven to help with depression.
