Just because you may have not heard of an artist or group does not mean they are not tremendous talents. Just because you never heard of them does not mean they are not absolutely fabulous. Just because you never heard of them does not mean they won 't dazzle you with delight or knock your socks off. Just because an artists receives a lot of airplay on the radio does not necessarily mean they are among the best. In fact, some of the best talent receives little or no airplay because they do not have have mega-giant record companies behind them promoting their product. The flip side of that coin is that some of the worst music ever produced is coming from artists that are currently very popular. Do not let the record companies or the radio stations dictate the full range of music to which you are exposed. If you submit to their selections, you limit the scope of your knowledge, enjoyment, and Salsa fulfillment. Salsa has a splendid history that began developing approximately 70 years ago. As one can imagine, much tremendous music, many talented artists, and innumerable fabulous recordings have contributed to Salsa's rich history over this time period. Most newcomers to Salsa have been fans for less than five years and therefore have a very limited knowledge of the number of artists that are part of this industry. They cannot be expected to know of all the masters etc. They can however keep an open mind and realize there is much that came before and much going on now that they will love once they experience it. When live music is brought to your locale
with which you are not familiar, go and hear it anyway. Do yourself a
favor. Take a chance! Trust the promoters. Nine times out of ten, you
will be very happy you did. Of course, you won't be crazy about everyone
you have paid to see, but mostly you will find the investment to have
been well worth it. In fact, you will most likely come away with new groups
to add to your "favorites" list. If
you need further reassurance, talk to the club disc jockeys. Ask them
to play some selections by the group coming to town. The best way to increase
your personal knowledge about Salsa is by going out and listening to the
best disc jockeys in the clubs. The best DJs play a large variety of artist,
groups and styles. Be aware that you will probably be blown away by your encounter with these professionals. You' will hear music that you'll want to rush out and buy; music you wish you already owned. Live performances allow the musicians creative freedom. They are not limited to playing a five-minute song for only five minutes. They will expand on it allowing for solos and variations on the theme. As a dancer you'll be so inspired that you will probably dance harder than you normally do. If you think for one minute that Salsa is going to be a lifetime love of yours, be sure to get out and see as many live performances as possible. You will witness Salsa history on many occasions. Don't think about the money involved. Money comes and goes, Memories are with us for a lifetime. Do not deny yourself an unforgettable memory and an incredible musical experience JUST BECAUSE YOU NEVER HEARD OF THEM. |
